Star Wars is an American epic space opera franchise created by George Lucas. The franchise's initial film, simply called Star Wars in its original 1977 run, was renamed Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope for the 1981 theatrical re-release.

Over time, Star Wars became one of the world's most popular entertainment franchises, spanning not only trilogies of films, but also animated television series, comic books, action figures, novels, and video games.

A number of people, both actors and crewmembers, who worked on Star Wars also worked on Ron Howard's fantasy movie Willow, which was written by Lucas.

The StarWars.com Databank featured several Willow characters as part as an April Fools' joke.
